11.00pm :

Beginning of a guided walking tour to Matera, the City of Stone. Matera has gained international fame for its ancient town, the "Sassi di Matera" (meaning "stones of Matera") and for the film by Mel Gibson, "the Passion", shot here. The Matera Sassi are houses dug into the calcareous rock itself. Many of these "houses" are really only caverns, and the streets in some parts of the Sassi often are located on the rooftops of other houses. Matera's position, hidden in a valley, made the town invisible to foreign invasions and preserved the centre completely out of time and history. The Matera Sassi are supposed to be prehistoric houses built in the Neolitical age and continuosly renovated through centuries. Furthermore, Matera preserves a large and diverse collection of buildings related to the Christian faith, including a large number of rupestrian churches carved from the soft volcanic rock of the region. These churches were listed in the Worlds Monuments Watch. Lunch on own during the tour.

04.00pm :

End of the tour and private transfer to departure destinations.
